Gallery Season Opens with Three New Shows!

Piedmont Virginia Community College opens its 2014-15 fine arts season with the Annual Faculty Exhibition and Under the Influence, two exhibits that showcase new works by art faculty members at the College. The shows run Sept. 26-Nov. 5 with a free opening reception Friday, Sept. 26, from 5-7 p.m. in the PVCC Gallery, located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building. The opening reception celebrates the end of summer with Ice Cream for Art, featuring mounds of ice cream in a variety of flavors for all in attendance. In the North Gallery, the Annual Faculty Exhibition features works in diverse media including ceramics, painting, photography and much more by PVCC faculty members Fenella Belle, Tom Clarkson, Stacey Evans, Lou Haney, Aaron Miller, Nancy Ross, Mary Shira, Jane Skafte, Richard Weaver and Rebekah Wostrel. The South Gallery features Under the Influence with recent work by Beryl Solla, art department chair and gallery curator, including a variety of hand sewn sequined pieces, vases and small sculptures designed for use as finials on garden gates and fences. This body of wheel-thrown and hand built ceramics reflect her love of gardening and bold color. Solla’s influence for these works, “the abundance and richness of this year’s incredible spring and summer," is evident in the vibrant images and energetic shapes of the objects. Solla’s most visible works as an artist are large-scale mosaic tile installations in public spaces with major projects in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Florida International University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami. The student gallery, KAG features the work of student and Humanities Administrative Assistant, Sherice Page. Paige will show a series of photographs completed last semester in Stacy Evan's Digital Photography class. The work takes a playful look at some seriously fabulous footware! The KAG is located on the second floor of the Dickinson Building. For more information, contact Beryl Solla, professor of art, at 434.961.5362 or email bsolla@pvcc.edu. The PVCC Gallery, located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building for Humanities and Social Sciences, is open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. A complete list of PVCC's 2013-14 season of fine arts and performance events is available at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts.
